Uses and Grats
After getting a better understanding of what this class is all about, I was wondering if this article was going to show up. I used this very article for another research assignment investigating the reasons why people use Facebook and what they get out of it. I have my own theories as to why people use sites like Facebook and Myspace. I believe people use it to keep in contact with their friends and family but also use it as a form of entertainment; to pass the time in their day. One of the key things that the article noted was that SNS is a convenient form of communication, and I completely agree with this statement. Being on Facebook, it eliminates the time issue and coordination issues when communicating. You can easily and quickly send someone a note just to let them know that you are thinking about them, and hundreds of people are at your finger tips to talk to. I really liked how this was a focus group type of study and that this article provided readers with actual quotes from that study. One of the other common reasons people use SNS is to be able to express themselves freely. It seems easier to express your opinions online (on a profile) rather than state your opinions in person. This article really does a great job of explaining what people get out of SNS and I can definitely relate with alot of the results.

I also thought about whether or not we were going to read an article about why and what do people get out of social networking sites such as facebook. It is interesting what the article states, it says that people like to use these sites as a way of constructing their identity the way they desire. However, although it is true that people may use the sites for a social construction, I believe there are others that use it as a form of entertainment. I find myself using the facebook application on my phone whenever I am either board or waiting for something. I do not necessarily do updates quite frequently on my page, but I do spend more time on other people’s pages. But the number one use of SNS has to be the fact that it is the easiest way of communicating, as stated in the article.
ReplyDeleteThat’s crazy you used this article for another class! I’ve never seen it before, but I have always wondered why people use Facebook and Myspace and what they get out of it. I know I use it to talk to friends that have moved out of California and stuff but never understood why some people on it constantly. I also agree with you, that yes people use them to keep in contact with friends and family. And that it is DEFINITELY a form of entertainment. I can’t believe how much people like to share over Facebook. Or how some people have full on arguments over it. Makes me laugh just thinking about it. I definitely agree with you that yes, this article does do a great job of explaining what people get out of SNS.
