Cyberbullying

I chose to write this post about cyberbullying after reading about the consequences that social networking can have on an individual. This article talks about how cyberbullying is not considered to be free speech and that it can have serious consequences. Most people use their social networking site to communicate and stay in contact with other people. Some use it as a medium to express themselves and this can become an issue. As the article explains, this one boy had posted a video of him singing and other people wrote terrible things as a response. What people dont realize is that verbally abusing people online have the same consequences as it can have in person. I remember the case of the girl who thought she was talking to a boy that she liked online, when really it was a mother, and she said horrible things to her. As a result, the girl killed herself. People need to be selective with what they post to people on facebook and other social networking sites. You cant hide behind your computer and your words in the cyber world can have the same negative effects in the real world.

  1. I definitely think that cyber bullying is a major issue in today’s society. Oh My Gosh!!! I totally remember the example you are talking about! The one where the girl thought she was talking to a boy she had a crush on and turns out it was a mother and not even the boys mother, and the mother’s assistant. I saw it on an E! Investigates special. I just can’t believe that people actually take the time out of their lives to harass and bug others. What good is that doing for you? And with younger kids that do cyber bully just think its funny and cool, and never think about the outcome of what they are doing.

  2. Cyberbulling is more serious and more common than ever. We read articles about children being bullied online, we see the news about how some children suffer from physiological issues, and sometimes we find out that children commit suicide due to cyberbulling. I found your article to be very interesting; I never thought that cyberbulling is not protected under “freedom of speech.” I do not think it should be protected; in fact, I think those who do the bulling ought to be punished and held accountable. Bulling can cause serious physiological problems to individuals, it can be frustrating and very hurtful to the point that permanent damage is inflicted.

  3. Cyberbullying is a major issue that I feel gets a lot of attention and very little action. The problem with cyberbulling is you cannot stop people from saying what they want to say, even if it is wrong or at the expense of someone else’s feelings. I grew up being pick on—and it sucked!! But at the end of the day there is only so much myself or family could to do to stop it. It was up to me to find the strength to get through it.
With that said, the torture of the schoolyard antics stopped at the schoolyard. When I went home I was in a safe place with my family. However, internet has changed that. So what was once limited to the schoolyard has now leaked into the safe haven of family rooms and bedrooms. It is hard to escape the noise now.
